Hai Xi
With its name derived from the title of an official plan of development, Hai Xi (or “Western Taiwan Straits Economic Zone”) is an area located in southeast China that includes the Fujian province and several cities around it. The economic zone was proposed by the government of Fujian ten years ago, in an attempt to improve the economic cooperation and cultural communication between Mainland China and Taiwan. This was during what was called a “significant positive turning point in the relationship” between China and Taiwan. As the closest part of China’s mainland to Taiwan, this area has also been an origin and then a main stage of the longterm conflict between the Communist Party of China and the Chinese Nationalist Party (Kuomintang), who dominate the regions west and east of the Taiwan Strait respectively.

The sculpture of Zheng Chenggong, Quanzhou
Zheng Chenggong was a general in the 17th century. After the collapse of the Ming dynasty Zheng and his army remained, still standing up to and fighting against the new government, the Qing dynasty. In 1661 Zheng successfully expelled the Dutch who colonized Taiwan at that time.
Today, Zheng is considered to be a national hero for recapturing Taiwan and his contribution to the unity of the domain. But after the recapture he took Taiwan as his own base and refused to surrender it to the new government on the continent. After his death and the defeat of his heirs against Qing, Taiwan finally became united with the mainland.

Battlefield Tourism Park of Dadeng Island, Xiamen
Kinmen is a small island, over 210 km away from the main island of Taiwan but only 1.8 km from the Dadeng Island, Mainland China.
Late in the second civil war the People's Liberation Army (PLA) tried to liberate Kinmen Island, which was occupied by Kuomintang, the former governor of China, but suffered the biggest loss after World War II. Since then Kinmen has been under control of the Republic of China (ROC, commonly known as Taiwan). During the 1958 Taiwan Strait Crisis, PLA fired over 450,000 shells at Kinmen but without landing the island. One of the closest front lines in Mainland is Dadeng Island. Since the 1990s Kinmen became an important link for Taiwanese business people between Mainland China and Taiwan. The battlefield on Dadeng Island was turned into the Battlefield Tourism Park and the Taiwan Small Goods Market.

Site of the military exercise during the Third Taiwan Strait Crisis, Pintan
The Third Taiwan Strait Crisis took place in 1996. Unsatisfied with the visit of Lee Teng-hui, president of Republic of China (ROC, commonly known as Taiwan), to Cornell and his speech at the Cornell University, which was read as a signal of moving ROC foreign policy away from the One-China policy, the PRC fired several missiles from Fujian into the waters that surround Taiwan. A set of live ammunition exercises was also staged by the People's Liberation Army (PLA) near Pingtan Fujian.
