City-sightseeing

These photos are about how I start to know a city.

When I came to Karlsruhe for my study years ago, the city was totally strange to me. I knew nobody, spoke badly German. My only connection to the city was the tram. Thanks to a semester ticket I visited each corner of the city, from east to west, from day to night. Sitting inside, the window of the tram was just the display window of the city.

To memorise my very first view of the city I build up a pinhole camera which can be mount on the window. I took each line of KVV, the local tram system, from the starting station to the terminal station, with the camera fixed on the window taking the cityscape passing by. Every trip resaults in a long-exposed photo on which is barely anything clear.
